Exciting Learning Opportunities for Elementary Science Teachers (Grades 4-6)
Teams of classroom teachers (2-5 members) from the same public school take part in a unique, research-based professional learning experience that improves both the teaching of science and student achievement. Teams who are accepted into the program will be randomized into either the treatment or control group. Those placed in the treatment group will receive:
- A four-week Elementary Science Institute (ESI) focused on science content, hands-on scientific inquiry, the nature of science, and problem-based teaching in order to engage students in STEM learning. (Lunch is provided. Room and board will be provided/reimbursed for those who live more than 25 miles away from the institute site*.)
- A $5,000 stipend per teacher payable over the academic year for completing all program components.
- Up to $1,000 in teaching resources, science materials, and web content for your classroom.
- A master teacher coach to assist with teaching in the classroom throughout the academic year.
- Two year subscription to Explore Learning's Gizmos.
- All expenses paid trip, except substitutes, to the Virginia Association of Science Teacher's (VAST) Professional Development Institute in November.
Teachers randomly placed into the control group are provided a $500 stipend in year one to fill out the data collection paperwork and surveys. Then, in year two, they are placed into the treatment group and provided all of the forms of support throughout that year.
*Institute sites are George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and The College of William and Mary.
Requirements:
- Completion of all data collection instruments including surveys, etc. (see consent form when you apply).
- Attendance in all summer and academic year instruction and support.
- Active, eager participation.
- School division science coordinator (or instructional specialist if there is no science coordinator) should attend the summer institute for two days.
- The school principal should attend the summer institute for one day.
