How Can VISTA Help You?

How can the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA’s) professional development program benefit 4th – 6th grade elementary teachers? Listen to what recent participants have to say:

“VISTA is one of the best experiences that I have had in my teaching career. It helped me see that I could include all the quality thinking skills with the science that I needed to teach, and that there is time to teach 'real science'. This was the best education I have received on how to teach. It changes how you think about teaching, planning and implementation, making school a place that everyone wants to be.”

- Mary Ann Settlemyer, 4th Grade Teacher
Centreville Elementary School, Centreville, VA

“VISTA has drastically affected my teaching of science. My students speak the science language fluently now and work at a higher level of thinking. They are also able to make their own connections and therefore make lasting impressions. After VISTA, your students' enthusiasm and eagerness to learn will be breathtaking.”

- Kaitlyn Boyle, 5th Grade Science Teacher
Robert E. Lee Elementary, Spotsylvania, VA

“I think all educators can get in a 'rut' with their teaching from time to time. For me, attending VISTA came after a particularly bad year and helped to renew my confidence, reaffirm my ability, and motivate and excite me so that I wasn't stuck doing things the same way!”

- Diane Brooks, 6th Grade Science Teacher
Freedom Middle School, Fredericksburg, VA

This no-cost program — which offers a $3,000 annual stipend and $1,000 in classroom science supplies per teacher — is an investment in science teaching across the state. Professional development programs will be held this summer at George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, the College of William & Mary, and Virginia Tech. Applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Apply today
